Our meeting hotel is offering super room rates of $80, single to quad occupancy, (plus room tax of 12.5%) from September 12-14, 2008. Under usual circumstances they will honor that rate up to 3 days prior and after. This is a gorgeous hotel literally in the heart of Orlando’s entertainment and theme park district. Our Annual Meeting sessions will include an option to monitor a portion of the Vic Baird Graduate Student Program beginning Friday evening. The graduate students will join the FLA AM on Saturday morning in the Hollywood Ballroom of the Four Points by Sheraton OrlandoStudio City hotel, Orlando, FL www.fourpoints.com/studiocity
Pre-registration is required by August 22, 2008 for early bird discount. Nominal late fees apply after this date. Hotel reservations are also required by August 22, 2008. Must Call hotel Reservations at 800-327-1366 for “FLA Annual Meeting”. Check-in and late onsite reservations will be in the Grand Foyer at a time to be announced later. We are again including free individual speech evaluations and therapy with more speech sessions. These will observed by the graduate students as training aids. Our faculty and staff will consist of veteran Speech Pathologists at PhD and Masters level with more than 100 years of combined experience serving laryngectomees. We continue soliciting first timers offering more free therapy and providing access to limited financial assistance. Due to very limited funds we anticipate only 4-5 financial grants based on actual expenses up to $350 each.. All grants are limited to Florida residents. We are increasing the number of students in the graduate student speech training sessions by inviting additional Graduate School Departments from Florida Universities. The 2008 program is developed to be new, fresh, exciting and beneficial to all. Included in the registration fee (lowest of any regional conference) is admittance to all AM sessions (including admittance to the Friday evening graduate student program as a monitor) and admittance to the exhibition room. As a big bonus we throw in the Friday evening “Meet and Greet” reception by the pool, mid morning and afternoon refreshments with snacks and a complementary light lunch on Sunday, All complements of the FLA and our wonderful Vendors. Our Saturday evening banquet will feature our usual enormous amount of donated raffle prizes. New this year! No more choosing between fish or chicken –Instead, an excellent full course, double entrée dinner of New York Strip Steak with Shrimp Scampi and a special FLA tribute dessert! Don’t miss it!

MEET THE 2008 FLA AM FACULTY / STAFF

Nancy Blair, MS, CCC-SLP, Largo, FL – Facilitator/Speech Evaluations
Speech Language Pathologist in the Barrett Outpatient Rehabilitation Services which is a clinic of Morton Plant Hospital and is part of Morton Mease Healthcare. She specializes in Voice Disorders. She has been involved with the FLA programs for 20 years and has 23 years experience working with laryngectomees. She was co-director of the former FLA Voice Institute, is a certified voice instructor for the IAL, served on the faculty of the IAL Voice Institute and co-chairman of the FLA AM.

Dr. Mark El-Deiry, ENT Surgeon, Tampa, FL - Speaker
Currently serves as Assistant Professor, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University of South Florida College of Medicine, specializing in Head and Neck Oncology & Microvascular Reconstruction of the Head and Neck. He received his undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biology from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia and his MD from Rush Medical College, Chicago, Illinois. He completed a general surgery internship at Swedish Hospital, Seattle, Washington. Dr. El-Deiry went on to complete his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and went on to complete a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology & Microvascular Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. This is his first year as a faculty member.

Tracie Hubbard, CCEMTP, Orlando, FL – Speaker
Tracie is Quality Assurance Manager with the Rural Metro Ambulance Service.

Deonne Malick, PhD, CCC-SLP, Tampa, FL – Speaker
Dr. Malick is the Manager of Speech Pathology at Moffitt Cancer Center and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Communication Sciences & Disorders, University of South Florida at Tampa. She is a true Floridian having received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Florida (Go Gators!). She received her PhD from the University of Iowa researching the motor control of the velopharyngeal mechanism and studying cleft and craniofacial disorders. Dr. Malick’s clinical and research interests including swallowing, voice, resonance and head & neck cancer. This is her first year as a faculty member.

Annette May, MA, CCC-SLP, Orlando, FL – Speaker
Annette May received her master’s degree in communicative disorders from The University of Memphis in 1999. She began her career in speech pathology in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at The University of Tennessee Medical Group in Memphis, TN. She then practiced at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center from 2002 – 2006 where she worked providing acute care and outpatient services as well as participating in clinical research. In August, 2006 she moved to Orlando, FL and is currently the Speech Pathology Coordinator for Oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando. Her clinical and research interests include functional outcomes related to treatment of head & neck cancer. This is her second year as a faculty member.

Caryn Melvin, PhD, CCC-SLP, Columbia, SC – Speaker
Dr. Melvin received her PhD I 1994 from the University of South Carolina (USC). Her clinical work is at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC. Dr. Melvin has been at the VA for 15 years. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at USC. She re-established the Greater Columbia Area Lost Cord Club and lectures extensively in the southeast on laryngectomy rehabilitation. Dr. Melvin is a certified instructor for the International Association of Laryngectomees (IAL) and a member of the faculty for the IAL Voice Institute. She is also a Director at Large with the IAL. This is her 7th consecutive year as a faculty member.

Annette Miller, BS, CCC-SLP, Pensacola, FL – Speech Evaluations
Mary Annette Miller is the outpatient manager at the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute, West Florida Hospital/Healthcare in Pensacola, FL from 1989 to the present. She was a graduate of the FLA Voice Institute in 1989 and has been a staff member of the Voice Institute and the Head and Neck Cancer Rehabilitation Course having served the FLA for 19 years.

Jeffrey Searl, PhD, CCC-SLP, Kansas City KS – Speaker/Speech Evaluations
Dr. Searl received his Master’s (1991) and PhD degrees (1999) in speech-language pathology from the University of Kansas. Currently he is an Associate Professor in the Hearing and Speech Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. Dr Searl’s primary interests are in the areas of voice disorders, head and neck cancers, swallowing disorders and the impact of clefts of the palate on speech. His research interests are focused on physiological, acoustic and perceptual features of alaryngeal speech with a particular focus on delineating those speaker, speech and intelligibility. Additional research focuses on articulatory movements in normal speakers and those with various types of neurological diseases. He recently accepted the position of FLA Director of Education commencing at the conclusion of the 2008 Vic Baird Graduate Student Program.

Dr. T. G. Snyder, Psychiatrist, Columbia, SC – Speaker

Thomas Shellenberger, head and neck surgeon, Orlando, FL – Speaker
Dr.Shellenberger is a member of the Thoracic/Head & Neck Specialty Section at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando. He holds certification from the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Shellenberger comes to M.D. Anderson-Orlando from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he recently completed a clinical and research fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology. His clinical research interests include complicated thyroid cancer and sarcoma of the head and neck. This is his first year as a VBGSP faculty member.

R.E. “Ed” Stone, PhD, CCC-SLP, Nashville, TN – Vic Baird Graduate Student Program (VBGSP) Course Director/Speaker/Speech Evaluations
Dr. Stone was born in Washington State on February 20, 1937. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960 from Whitworth College, a Master of Education degree from the University of Oregon in 1964 and a PhD degree from the University of Michigan in 1971. In 1964 he was appointed an instructor in Speech at Portland State University. Thereafter he became an instructor in Otolaryngology, promoted to assistant professor and then associate professor of speech in the Department of Otolaryngology at him the University of Michigan. Later he was assistant professor, rising to associate professor of Speech Pathology in Otolaryngology and Graduate Programs at Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana School of Dentistry. Dr. Stone began his career at Vanderbilt University in 1987 as an associate professor of Speech Pathology in the Department of Otolaryngology. Upon the creation of the Vanderbilt Voice Center, he became the Director of Vocology. Retiring from Vanderbilt in 2002, he was appointed to the Emeriti Faculty at Vanderbilt University. Ed is the current FLA Director of Education and has served this organization for 23 years much of it s the Director of the FLA Voice Institute, the most successful long running venture of that type outside of the IAL Voice Institute. Dr. Stone held the position of IAL VI Director for 6 years. This will be his last year as FLA Director of Education pursuant to his resignation.
